The Johnston Ridge Observatory (JRO) opens today! With the heavy snowpack this winter, we've speculated on and off all winter and early spring whether or not the JRO would reopen on time for the 28th anniversary of the 1980 eruption on May 18. For those VolcanoCam viewers already sweating under a hot Sun and heat, check out these photos from the Washington Department of Transportation. Yes, it still is winter at Mount St. Helens!

The Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument reported yesterday that the Johnston Ridge Observatory (JRO) will reopen on time for the 2008 summer visitor season. The visitor center will reopen this Friday, 16 May 2008. On Sunday, 18 May 2008, the 28th anniversary of the eruption of Mount St. Helens, the entrance fees will be waived. Special thanks must go to the Washington Department of Transportation for their efforts in clearing the snow and ice from State Route 504, the Mount St. Helens maintenance crews for preparing the JRO after a very long and snow winter, and the VolcanoCamGnome for his special efforts.

The US Forest Service web server experienced what can be be described as a glitch earlier this week This meant no one was able to view the VolcanoCams for a couple of days. All appears well with the server now. The VolcanoCams continued to function with no problems.

Yes, the calendar says May but the view from the VolcanoCams says winter. But at least we have something to see this morning as the clouds lift a little bit.

We may be in for some clearing weather the rest of the week.
