Artist in Residence 2008
CANCELLED Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is pleased to announce the Artist in Residence for 2008 is Katherine Larson from Brighton, Michigan.  Katherine has over 150 murals and countless commissioned paintings on display from the Midwest to the Southwest in businesses, public places and private residences.

Au Sable Day and Public Lands Day 2008
On Saturday, September 27, Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore will host the annual “Au Sable Day” at the historic 1874 Au Sable Light station near Grand Marais.  The event runs from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.  The day includes a free ALTRAN shuttle to the lighthouse from Hurricane River Campground, free tours of the light station and tower, and facility photovoltaic system.

Changing of the Guard
This summer for the first time, Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore has opened the Au Sable Light Station Museum and Information Center.  This has largely been accomplished through the efforts of volunteer lighthouse keepers.

Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore and the National Parks Conservation Association have launched a new website, Do Your Part for Climate Friendly Parks, which empowers national park visitors to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and help national parks nationwide become leaders in combating global warming.

VHS Prevention and Response Plan Approved
The four units of the National Park System on Lake Superior (Isle Royale National Park, Apostle Islands and Pictured Rocks National Lakeshores, and Grand Portage National Monument) and the Grand Portage Band of the Lake Superior Chippewa have approved a plan to protect park and tribal fishery resources from viral hemorrhagic septicemia (VHS).

Did You Know?
Located within Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, the Au Sable Light Station is on the National Register of Historic Places. Constructed in 1874, the station beacon still shines over Lake Superior's frigid waters. The lamp is now solar powered.
