Seasonal and sectoral patterns in youth employment

Gerald S. Oettinger
Assistant Professor of economics at the University of Texas at Austin

Data comparing employment patterns among high-school-age youth show that student employment is highly seasonal and concentrated in just a few industries and occupations, while dropouts tend to work year round and in more diverse set of jobs. This article examines the seasonal and sectoral patterns in youth employment using data from the 1979 National Longitudinal Survey of Youth (NLSY79).
