Padre Island National Seashore rangers are responsible for independently performing a broad range of resource and visitor protection responsibilities on a 68 mile long barrier island that is concurrent jurisdiction. The employee will play an important role in the ranger division by playing a significant role in its traffic enforcement program; develop programs/operations to curb poaching, address illegal commercial fishing in park waters, and deter a significant volume of drug and immigrant smuggling through the park. S/he will protect and preserve park resources using a broad variety of techniques including: law enforcement, resource knowledge, and education. Law enforcement duties include: detection, investigation, apprehension, and prosecution under provisions of applicable federal and state laws, as well as, rules and regulations set into place to ensure the protection of visitors and employees and to safeguard the park resources. Patrol methods include: vessels, dune buggy, aviation means, and significant use of 4X4 vehicles for down island patrols. Other duties include: performing emergency medical services, boat operations, search and rescue, and wildland fire suppression duties.
Padre Island National Seashore is located in the Emerald City of Corpus Christi, Texas (pop. 271,000). The area consists of white sand beaches, rolling dunes, turquoise water and an abundance of natural resources. Elevations range from sea level to 75 feet. The climate is humid with a year round tropical breeze. The yearly average temperature is 75 degrees with summer time highs in the low 100’s and winter in the 40’s. Although government quarters are not available, housing is in abundance at moderate prices. Good grade schools and high schools with bus services are available as well as other city services. Churches, banks, hospitals, etc are in abundance. Many civic organizations and various youth clubs are available to join. A wide variety of recreational facilities and sporting events are offered in the area. Corpus Christi has a 4-year university and a junior college, several theaters, radio stations, and local TV stations and cable.
