Illustrator
Jerry Pinkney (b. 1939) conveys the essence
of Lindy and the folk hero Drylongso, the two
main characters in Viriginia Hamilton’s
book Drylongso, through richly detailed
watercolors.
Hamilton
(1936-2002) collaborated creatively with leading
children’s book illustrator Pinkney to
relate the story of a rural African-American
family caught in the throes of a major drought
in 1975. Pinkney’s twenty vibrant drawings
bring the narrative to life and give enduring
form to strong characters, themes of nobility,
and the importance of family.
This body of
original art work, purchased in 2006, relates
not only to the Library’s landmark collections
of FSA
and OWI photographs, but also represents
a contemporary counterpart to the Library’s
prized collection of original illustration
art, the Cabinet
of American Illustration.
