DOT Unveils Talking Kiosk to Aid Disabled Ferry Passengers
New York City Transportation Commissioner Sadik-Khan, Small Business Services Commissioner Walsh, Mayor's Office of People with Disabilities Commissioner Sapolin, Staten Island Borough President Molinaro and Councilwoman Brewer today unveiled a "Talking Kiosk" that will help direct disabled passengers in the St. George Ferry Terminal on Staten Island. The Talking Kiosk is the first in a City-owned building.

TLC Completes Auction of 63 Independent Accessible New York City Taxicab Medallions
The New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission (TLC) today successfully auctioned 63 new taxicab medallions earmarked for use with wheelchair accessible vehicles. This will bring to 144 the number of New York City taxicabs capable of offering ramp entry service to wheelchair users.

Mayor Bloomberg Hosts Reception Honoring 17th Anniversary of the Passage of the Americans With Disabilities Act
Mayor Bloomberg today celebrated the 17th Anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act with a reception at Gracie Mansion. Signed by President George H.W. Bush in 1990, the Americans with Disabilities Act is a landmark civil rights law which has fostered independence, empowerment and inclusion for millions of Americans.

City Installs Beach Mats for the Disabled
Wading into the summer waters has gotten a bit easier for the disabled and elderly at four city beaches.

The Department of Parks and Recreation this morning announced the installation of specially designed mats that give them better access to the sand and water.

On May 6, New York City Sports Commissioner Kenneth J. Podziba and Acting Transportation Commissioner Judy Bergtraum welcome the 30th annual Commerce Bank Five Boro Bike Tour to the streets of New York City. The Commerce Bank Five Boro Bike Tour is the largest recreational cycling event in the United States. This exciting tour, that is expected to attract some 32,000 cyclists, involves a leisurely ride on traffic-free roads throughout all five of New York City's boroughs.

Mayor Bloomberg, Department for the Aging and United States Postal Service Detail New Carrier Alert Program
Mayor Bloomberg today announced New York City's new Carrier Alert Program, which trains United States Postal Service letter carriers to identify signs of distress among seniors and people with disabilities and quickly connect them with social services through the City's Department for the Aging.

Mayor Bloomberg and New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) Chairman Tino Hernandez today announced the availability of 22,000 new Section 8 housing vouchers for very low-income families seeking affordable housing in New York City. Because of the availability of new vouchers, NYCHA’s Section 8 voucher waiting list will reopen for the first time in 12 years.
