MOBILITY

  • The Visitor Center, restrooms, and picnic tables are accessible.
  • A wheelchair is available for loan at the Visitor Center front desk.
  • There is a flat, paved, 0.36-mile, self-guiding loop trail through the original mission site. There are several benches located along the trail.
  • A 370-foot, paved path leads from the Visitor Center, up a small rise, to where the Whitmans are buried in a mass grave.
  • A paved trail at the base of the hill leads to a marker for the Whitman's biological daughter, Alice Clarissa Whitman, who drowned at the age of 2.
  • A monument to the Whitmans stands at the top of a hill. There are two paths to the top. Both are paved, but are very steep. There is a bench half-way up on both paths.
 

VISION/HEARING

  • A braille version of the park brochure is available for use while at the site.
  • The self-guiding trail through the original mission grounds, the mass grave, and the monument on top of the hill all have signs that include audio information. This information can be heard after pushing a button.
  • The park slide show is open-captioned. There is a separate reader board below the screen.
  • Large print text of the trailside recordings is available.

Did You Know?
The furniture in the historic Oregon Caves Lodge was custom made by the Mason Manufacturing Company. The furniture has hand painted designs and often used iron strapping, and leather in its construction. The furniture was branded with a small horse shoe design, the icon of the company.
