Introduction
The University of Delaware Library maintains a Foundation Center Cooperating Collection which is one of more than 200 similar collections affiliated with the Foundation Center, a national, nonprofit organization with headquarters in New York City. Located in the Reference Department of the Morris Library, the Cooperating Collection consists of specialized research materials designed to assist organizations in locating potential sources of funding, especially grants from private foundations. Although you must visit the University of Delaware Library Foundation Center Cooperating Collection to use either the printed or licensed electronic resources, the following “virtual” resources are available for use outside the Library.

Foundation Center
In addition to providing an overview of the Foundation Center publications and services, the site provides links to the Web sites of private foundations, corporate foundations, community foundations, and public charities. It also provides access to the Philanthropy News Digest, a service which provides current news stories related to philanthropy and charitable giving. The site also has a very helpful Frequently Asked Questions section.

Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance
This is a complete listing of federal programs, projects, services and activities which provide assistance or benefits to the American public. It includes summary program descriptions and is searchable by keyword.

A free lookup tool that provides brief facts on U.S. foundations, corporate grantmakers and public charities. The entries include links to grantmaker Web sites and also to grantmakers’ recently-filed IRS 900 PF tax forms.

Chronicle of Philanthropy
Published every other week, the Chronicle of Philanthropy provides the nonprofit world with current information on philanthropy. Its Web site provides news summaries of its top stories, a few full text articles, announcements of conferences and workshops, application deadlines, and job opportunities.

Charity Reports (Better Business Bureau)
Charity Reports maintained by the BBB Wise Giving Alliance provide an overview of charities’ programs and finances. The reports indicate whether a charity meets the standards established by the Council of Better Business Bureaus.

Internal Revenue Service: Search for Charities
A searchable database that can be used to determine whether an organization is a private foundation or a public charity. An electronic version of the Cumulative List of Organizations (Publication 78), the database provides an organization’s name, city of location, and tax-exempt status.

The Web site of the library that serves the Indiana University Center on Philanthropy. The Library’s focus is on philanthropy as a field of study and it collects books, dissertations, and other materials about philanthropy and its role in societies over time. Its staff compiles and produces the Philanthropic Studies Index, which indexes journal literature on topics and issues concerning the nonprofit sector.
