Portland to Host Meeting of Utility Commission Regulators

Salem, OR – Portland will be the site for the summer committee meetings of the National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners (NARUC). Commissioners representing U.S. States, territories, federal agencies and international members will attend the meeting, which runs July 28-31, 2002.
 
Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) Chairman Pat Wood will address the attendees via a video/teleconference.
 
Committee agendas will cover a wide range of issues related to competition in the telecommunications sector, consumer affairs, electricity, gas, water, finance/technology and international relations.
 
Oregon Public Utility Commissioner Joan Smith is chairwoman of NARUC’s telecommunications committee, which will discuss internet issues and access to rights of way.
 
Attendees will also discuss problems that have arisen as a result of FERC’s efforts to promote wholesale electricity competition by combining the utility industry’s transmission lines under regional organizations.
 
Attendees must be registered.
 
The NARUC summer committee meetings will be held at the Portland Hilton, 921 SW Sixth Avenue Portland, Oregon.
