Salem, Ore. The Oregon Public Utility Commission will hold its annual “Natural Gas Outlook” meeting July 15, 2008 at 1:30 p.m. in the Commission’s Main Hearing Room at 550 Capitol Street in Salem. The Commission will receive a briefing on the short and long term outlooks for natural gas prices Oregon consumers will face for home heating, industry, and generation of electricity.

Roughly 715,000 Oregonians receive natural gas from one of three natural gas companies. The companies are Northwest Natural Gas, Avista Utilities and Cascade Natural Gas.

In November the Commission adjusts each company’s rates either up or down to reflect changes in the wholesale price of natural gas.  The Purchased Gas Adjustment (PGA) passes through to customers the changes when prices go up and when they drop. The adjustment also addresses differences between forecasted gas costs in the previous year with actual costs.

Meeting agenda:
  • Overview of expected natural gas price increase – Oregon Public Utility Commission Staff
  • Energy efficiency and conservation to help cope with the price increase – Energy Trust of Oregon
  • Utility presentations – Avista, Cascade, and NW Natural
  • Rate increases due to increase in natural gas price
  • Utility programs to help customers cope with gas price increase
  • The larger context for the gas price increase – Northwest Gas Association
