Ice in the Chesapeake Bay

Aqua MODIS provided a good look at the aftermath of the winter storm that hit the greater Chesapeake Bay region on Jan. 24, 2003. This scene reveals a number of pockets of ice forming on part of the bay.

On January 24, 2003, a winter storm dumped 1 to 2 inches of snow around the Washington, D.C., area and covered parts of Maryland?s Eastern Shore with 5 inches of snow. The image above, acquired by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard NASA?s Aqua satellite, shows the extent of the snow cover (white pixels) in contrast to the various brown hues of the bare land surface. The scene also reveals the extent of ice forming on the Chesapeake Bay as well as the Potomac River.

This scene was featured recently in a local television weather report (10.3 MB MPEG) given by NBC’s Chief Meteorologist Bob Ryan.
