2009 Tribal Wildlife and Landowner Incentive Program Grants

Congress has not signed into law the budget for 2009 but, when authorization is available, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service will administer the tribal grant programs in accordance with the direction provided by Congress. The Service issued a request for proposals from federally-recognized tribes under the Tribal Wildlife Grants (TWG) program, on Thursday, May 1, 2008, with all applications to be post marked by September 2, 2008.

The Service will award grants under the Tribal Wildlife Grants Program (TWG). To alert tribes to this grant opportunity, letters were sent to Federally recognized tribes with copies to Tribal natural resource partners in Region 3.

The web site address: http://www.fws.gov/nativeamerican/ contains notification that grant applications for TWG are now being accepted for 2009 funding and there is a 120-day deadline for the submission of applications. All applications must be postmarked on or before Tuesday, September 2, 2008.

The web site has reference to a link for an application kit that will provide details to assist you in developing a proposal.

Congress signed into law the budget for 2008 and made $6.2 million available for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to administer the tribal wildlife grant program. The Service issued a request for proposals from federally-recognized tribes under the Tribal Wildlife Grants (TWG) program, July 26, 2007, with all applications to be post marked by October 1, 2007.

Nationwide, tribes submitted 110 grant applications. After Regional and National reviews, a total of 33 tribal proposals were recommended for funding. Five tribes in Region 3 received awards totaling more than $983,000. Tribes contributed another $688,240 in match.
