W. Michael Hawes is the associate administrator for Program Analysis and Evaluation at NASA. In this capacity, he is responsible for providing objective studies and analyses in support of policy, program, and budget decisions by the NASA Administrator.

Most recently Dr. Hawes served as the deputy associate administrator for Program Integration in the Office of Space Operations at NASA Headquarters in Washington from 2005 through 2008. In this capacity he was responsible for providing space operations support and a focused interface to the exploration activities across the agency. He also was charged with the transition and disposition of space shuttle assets as that program ends in 2010. Prior to that assignment, Hawes served from 2002 through 2005 as the senior assistant to the associate administrator for Space Operations focused on Space Shuttle Return to Flight actions.

From April 1999 through June 2002 Hawes served as the deputy associate administrator, International Space Station. In this capacity his primary duties included directing the space station budget; establishing and implementing station policy and coordinating external communications; and liaison activities with the administration, Congress, industry and the station's international partners.

Prior to this assignment, Hawes served at NASA Headquarters as the deputy director, International Space Station Requirements; chief engineer, International Space Station; and as the manager, Utilization and Operations, Space Station Freedom Program Office in Reston, Va.

Prior to joining the Space Station Office in Reston, Hawes served in several technical and managerial positions at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston. His responsibilities included the integration of experiments and commercial satellites into the space shuttle. Hawes served as the payload officer in the Shuttle Mission Control Center for several missions, from STS-5 through STS-61B. In addition, Hawes served on the Mission Control team for the Skylab Reentry team in 1979.

Dr. Hawes is an adjunct faculty member of the George Washington University College of Engineering in Washington. His focus areas include engineering management and systems engineering.

Hawes was born in Greenville, Pa., where he attended Greenville Senior High School. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Notre Dame in 1978 and Masters and Doctor of Science of Engineering Management degrees from the George Washington University in 1996 and 2006 respectively. He is also a graduate in Program Management from the Defense Systems Management College, Ft. Belvoir, Va.
