MinnesotaHabitat Restored AfterOil Spill
Midwest Region, September 18, 2008
Print Friendly Version

Environmental Contaminants biologists at the Twin Cities Ecological Services Field Office have completed a 30-acre habitat restoration project to replace resources impacted by a pipeline oil spill which occurred near Cohasset, Minnesota, in 2002.  The Service worked with co-trustees (Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, Minnesota Pollution Control Agency, Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe) and Enbridge Energy, Inc., as part of a cooperative Natural Resource Damage Assessment to complete the project.  Implementation of the work plan for the Cohasset Site was initiated and completed in August 2008.  TCFO EC and Conservation Planning Assistance biologists coordinated with U. S. Forest Service and Enbridge Energy, Inc., personnel.  The groups developed the work plan, restored the hydrologic connection, and recontoured the area to restore appropriate types, quality, and quantities of habitat needed to address natural resources injured by the discharge of oil.  The habitat restoration project provides important forested wetland habitat for a wide variety of wildlife, including migratory birds, mammals, amphibians, and insects.  The area will be managed and protected for the public as part of the Chippewa National Forest.
