Description

Research to Prevent Blindness (RPB) has been the leading non-goverment source of financial support for eye research directed at finding treatment, cures, and preventives for all diseases that damage and destroy sight, since it was founded in 1960. As part of its mission, RPB provides information on eye disease and eye research to the public. RPB's grants to departments of ophthalmology at major medical institutions enable them to increase eye research capability and productivity. Special awards are made to provide incentives to individual scientists involved in reseach at these institutions. RPB has also generated financial support for the nationwide construction of modernized centers for the advancement of clinical and basic research and the training of ophthalmic scientists. RPB maintains a web site offering resources on eye research and blinding diseases; it publishes an annual report that contains information on programs it has funded, awards made, and budget allocations.
