WASHINGTON, Jan. 3, 2006 – Three Iraqi police officers were killed and 14 others were wounded today when a car bomb detonated alongside a bus in Baqubah, Iraq, Multinational Force Iraq officials reported.
Also today, the Defense Department identified U.S. soldiers killed in earlier action. The local Provincial Joint Coordination Center was first to respond to the Baqubah car bombing and dispatched fire trucks, a wrecker and other recovery vehicles. Soldiers from the 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, also responded with recovery vehicles. The bus, on its way to the police academy in Sulaymaniyah, was filled with Iraqi police officers, officials said. The wounded police officers were transported to local Iraqi medical facilities for treatment. Meanwhile, defense officials announced the identities of two soldiers killed supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom: - Spc. Marcelino R. Corniel, 23, of La Puente, Calif., died in Baghdad on Dec. 31 during an enemy mortar attack near his observation post. Corniel was assigned to the Army National Guard's 1st Battalion, 184th Infantry Regiment, Fullerton, Calif.
- Staff Sgt. Christopher J. Vanderhorn, 37, of Pierce, Wash., died in Sinia, Iraq, on Jan. 1, when a roadside bomb exploded near his patrol vehicle. Vanderhorn was assigned to the Army's 1st Battalion, 187th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division, Fort Campbell, Ky.
