While conducting an air-insertion mission in Baghdad today, Task Force Ironhorse soldiers killed several insurgents, detained one and discovered a significant weapons cache.

Soldiers from 2nd Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment, received small-arms and indirect fire from insurgents at about 10:45 a.m. The soldiers returned fire, killing six terrorists and wounding one. Following the firefight, soldiers discovered two dead insurgents wearing explosives-laden suicide vests.

An explosive ordnance disposal team destroyed the cache.

Iraqi soldiers and U.S. Marines uncovered hundreds of mortars, artillery rounds, rockets and other warheads during a three-day sweep near the ancient town of Hit in Anbar province.

Iraqi soldiers from 1st Battalion, 2nd Brigade, 7th Iraqi Army Division, and Marines under 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit (Special Operations Capable), 2nd Marine Division, unearthed rockets, artillery and mortar rounds, along with tank rounds and large quantities of rocket propellant, fuses and blasting caps.
