WASHINGTON, April 19, 1996 Air Force Maj. Mark Seifert and Army Command Sgt. Maj. Debra Smith captured overall titles at the armed forces bowling championships. Nearly 50 bowlers competed in the four-day event held recently at Fort Jackson, S.C. Seifert, stationed at Scott Air Force Base, Ill., averaged 205 in winning the 1995 combined championship. That pace was 1.5 pins better than Army Sgt. 1st Class Ray Porritt of Fort Sam Houston, Texas. Third place went to Navy Petty Officer 1st Class Kevin Frederick of the Detroit Military Entry Processing Station. Following Frederick was Army Staff Sgt. Bill Anthony of Fort Eustis, Va., the defending men's champion. Air Force Senior Airman Bob Sense of Grand Forks Air Force Base, N.D., was fifth. Smith easily captured the women's crown, rolling a 199.2 average in claiming the title. The Fort Huachuca, Ariz., soldier cruised to a 10-pin victory over teammate Maj. Debra Riefflin of Army's Military District of Washington. Riefflin was also the runner-up in 1995. Third was Tech. Sgt. Christina Coy of Brooks Air Force Base, Texas. Fourth went to Petty Officer 1st Class Lana Mink of Randolph Air Force Base, Texas, the 1995 women's defending champion. Army Chief Warrant Officer Elaine Riggs (Columbus, Ohio) took fifth. Navy took the men's overall bowling championship, followed by Army, Air Force and Marine Corps. Army captured the women's overall team title, followed by Air Force, Navy and Marine Corps. In singles competition, Navy Master Chief Petty Officer Bev Brennan of Barbers Point Naval Air Station, Hawaii, took the women's competition. Brennan averaged 205.5 in beating Smith. Riefflin took third, followed by Mink and Riggs. Anthony grabbed the men's singles competition, averaging nearly 216 pins per game. This was more than nine pins per game better than Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Michael Cowles (Naval Medical Center, San Diego). Frederick took third, followed by Marine Corps Staff Sgt. Bill Eckley (Marine Corps Air Station, Iwakuni, Japan) and Porritt. Riefflin and Anthony combined to capture the mixed doubles title with nearly a 203 average. Their win was more than five pins per game better than Navy's Chief Petty Officer Dee Foust (Sasebo Fleet Activity, Japan) and Petty Officer 1st Class John Pangburn (Miramar Naval Air Station, Calif.). Siefert and Air Force Capt. Patricia Fox (Tyndall Air Force Base, Fla.) took third. In women's doubles, Smith and Riefflin combined for a 193.3 average to take the event. Army teammates Capt. Madeline Bondy (Fort Knox, Ky.) and Sgt. 1st Class Karen Mayfield (Fort Story, Va.) took second place, with third going to the Air Force team of Coy and Staff Sgt. Karen Clacken (Brooks). Siefert and Master Sgt. Steve Bergan (Scott Base) teamed to win the men's doubles title. The duo combined for 2,555 pins -- an average of 212.9. The Navy pair of Frederick and Cowles took second, followed by Pangburn and Petty Officer 2nd Class Robert Bozarth (Long Beach, Calif.). In the one-day team competition, the Air Force team of Coy, Clacken, Fox, Senior Master Sgt. Bobbi Boutwell (Whiteman Air Force Base, Mo.), Master Sgt. Catherine Faber (Offutt Air Force Base, Neb.) and Senior Airman Karin Bagley (Sheppard Air Force Base, Texas) took top honors in the women's competition. Army finished second, followed by Navy and Marine Corps. Porritt and Anthony helped Army men take their one-day team event. The two combined with Sgt. 1st Class Tony Szeluga (Fort Campbell, Ky.), Sgt. Alton Betts (Fort Hood, Texas), Staff Sgt. Clark Blosser (Tripler Army Medical Center, Hawaii) and Chief Warrant Officer Danny Berardi (Wiesbaden, Germany) for the title.
