  • Ten-year trend data show that the number of persons arrested in the Nation for 2005 declined 4.4 percent from the number of persons arrested in 1996. Over the same timeframe, the number of juveniles arrested was down 24.9 percent, but the number of adults arrested was up 0.7 percent.
  • The number of persons arrested for violent crimes was down 12.2 percent in 2005 from the 1996 figure.
  • The number of juveniles arrested for violent crimes dropped significantly (-25.2 percent) in the 10-year trend. Most notably, the number of juveniles arrested for murder was down 46.8 percent.
  • The number of persons arrested for property crimes in 2005 decreased 22.1 percent from the 1996 figure.
  • In 2005, the number of arrests for drug abuse violations rose 24.6 percent from the number of persons arrested in 1996. The number of adults arrested for this offense was up 30.2 percent in the 10-year trend, but the number of juveniles arrested was down 9.6 percent.
  • The number of persons arrested for driving under the influence declined 7.0 percent when data from 2005 were compared with data from 1996. The number of adults arrested for this offense also was also down 7.0 percent in the 10-year trend.
