Soldier Killed in Baghdad; Raid Dents Terrorist Efforts

American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, Dec. 8, 2004 – A Task Force Baghdad soldier was killed Dec. 7 when his patrol came under small-arms fire in the Iraqi capital, Multinational Force Iraq officials announced.

The name of the soldier is being withheld until the family is notified, and the incident is under investigation, officials said.

A day earlier, a raid "put a serious dent" in terrorist efforts in Baghdad, according to Army Col. Robert "Abe" Abrams, commander of the 1st Cavalry Division's 1st Brigade Combat Team, which operates in eastern Baghdad.

Task Force Baghdad soldiers conducted the Dec. 6 raid, dubbed Operation Soprano Sunset, on a sports complex suspected of being used as an operations base for transnational terrorists in the eastern section of the city, officials said.

The troops captured several suspected senior transnational terrorists, including key leaders, operatives and financiers. They also seized records and computers during the raid, officials said.

The names and exact number of insurgent suspects were not released, pending legal processing, officials reported.
