WASHINGTON, Dec. 31, 2004 – Soldiers from the 1st Infantry Division's 1st Squadron, 4th Cavalry Regiment, detained 49 people early today in a series of raids near Duluiyah, Iraq.
The soldiers searched 13 homes and the surrounding areas as part of "Operation Powder River." They confiscated bomb-making equipment, a global positioning system and a cellular telephone. On Dec. 30, soldiers from the same unit detained two suspects after their combat patrol was attacked with two improvised explosive devices near Duluiyah. Iraqi National Guard soldiers from the 201st ING Battalion, in a joint raid with 1st Infantry Division soldiers from 1st Battalion, 112th Armor Regiment, detained two people near Tikrit early today. The suspects are believed to have threatened ING soldiers. The soldiers confiscated two AK-47 assault rifles and a pistol. The suspects were taken to an ING base for questioning. On Dec. 30, Multinational Force Iraq troops discovered and cleared 11 improvised explosive devices, discovered and cleared six weapons caches, conducted six cordon-and-search operations and two raids, detaining 49 suspected insurgents. North of Baghdad, a cordon-and-search operation resulted in the capture of five suspected insurgents and a small weapons cache. Forces west of Baghdad discovered three weapons caches in the town of Karabilah. Acting on information received from various sources, homes where alleged insurgent activity was taking place were searched. More than 150 mortar rounds were among the weapons seized. In Baghdad, multinational and Iraqi forces continued joint patrols, detaining 13 suspected insurgents and confiscating several firearms during cordon-and- search operations. In Mashru, south of Baghdad, a cordon-and-search operation led to the discovery of a weapons cache containing nearly 40 AK-47 assault rifles and nearly 500 AK-47 rounds.
