Suppliers of Seed for Certified Organic Production Database

This database provides sources for organic seed of both agronomic and horticultural crops. Some national, mail-order suppliers of untreated seed are included, with the emphasis on small alternative seed companies offering open-pollinated vegetable, flower, and herb seed.

Farmers should contact their certifying agency or state department of agriculture to find out whether these agencies can supply lists of seed sources for organic production of their region's leading crops. In states that do not operate their own organic certification program, contact a private certifier operating in that state.

The Organic Materials Review Institute (OMRI) lists some sources of organic seed, by variety. Other sources of organic seed may be found at the Washington State University organic program seed database. For grain growers interested in using local, bin-run organic seed, see the ATTRA publication Marketing Organic Grains for a regionally balanced list of organic grain buyers.

The organic seed search service provided by Carolina Farm Stewardship Association's Save Our Seed Project ended December 2006.

The buyer needs to ask to see his seed supplier's documentation, including organic certification. NCAT has not inspected certificates of any company listed herein or their certifiers, nor does the following listing make or imply any claims about the trustworthiness or business practices of any company.

We are always interested in feedback. Any comments or suggestions should be sent to: Katherine Adam, NCAT Agriculture Specialist.
