Technical Abstract: Given the seriousness of the Fusarium wilt [(Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. vasinfectum (FOV)] race 4 problem in California, cotton breeders need alternative sources of germplasm for improving resistance in pima cottons. For this purpose the Agricultural Research Service, United States Department of Agriculture and University of California announce the early release of four Pima cotton (Gossypium barbadense L.) germplasm lines, SJ-07P-FR01, SJ-07P-FR02, SJ-07P-FR03, and SJ-07P-FR04, that possess good levels of resistance to Fusarium wilt (FOV) race 4, moderate lint yield, and good to superior fiber length and strength. SJ-07P-FR01, SJ-07P-FR02, and SJ-07P-FR03 lines originated from the cross of germplasm lines 8810 and NMSI 1601. Line 8810 was developed from a cross between P 73 x P 72. NMSI 1601 originated from Sea Island cotton germplasm line (NMSU). SJ-07P-FR04 is a population originating from re-selection within P73. In multiple field and greenhouse tests, the SJ-07P-FR series showed good levels of resistance to FOV race 4, compared to the resistant and susceptible checks. Due to the early release of the SJ-07P-FR series, the agronomic and fiber traits of these lines are not known with precision, and data is not complete for the whole series. Users should apply caution in utilizing these lines and should not assume that the lines provide complete resistance against FOV race 4. The SJ-07P-FR series will help to speed efforts to broaden the genetic base, which is critical to the success and future of the pima cotton industry.
