Critical Transportation Investment Needs
Traffic crossing the Interstate Bridge on I-5.
The Interstate Bridge on I-5.
In 2006, ODOT Director Matthew Garrett called transportation professionals together for a series of meetings to discuss options for investments to improve Oregon’s transportation system. These investment options are based on the principles, goals and objectives of the updated Oregon Transportation Plan and are organized around areas of investment that:
  • Take care of the system
  • Make the system work better
  • Improve safety
  • Reduce congestion

The investment options listed in the publication are not intended to be a comprehensive listing of all investments that should be made to achieve the goals for each transportation mode (rail, aviation, public transit, maritime/ports and highway). Instead, the options provide a range of choices that could be advanced. The Oregon Transportation Plan, the 2005 Cost of Congestion Study, the Marine Transportation System Study (2005), the I-5 Rail Capacity Study (2003) and regional transportation plans offer more inclusive lists.
