NMFS Rescinds the Chiniak Gully Research Area Closure to Trawl Fishing in the Gulf of Alaska

The National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) rescinds the closure in the Chiniak Gully Research Area of the Gulf of Alaska (GOA) to all commercial trawl fishing and testing of trawl gear from August 1 to September 20, 2008, according to James W. Balsiger, Administrator, Alaska Region, NMFS. The Chiniak Gully Research Area was closed as a control for research by the Alaska Fisheries Science Center (AFSC) on the effects of the pollock fishery on pollock abundance and distribution.

The Administrator, Alaska Region, NMFS, has determined that research activities will not be conducted this year in the Chiniak Gully Research Area of the GOA. Because research activities will not be conducted this year and to minimize impacts on the fishing industry, the Chiniak Gully Research Area trawl closure will be rescinded in 2008.
