Geometronics is part of the Technical Services Branch, Roadway Section, serving the project development and construction engineering business of the Oregon Department of Transportation. The Geometronics Unit includes five Groups - Survey Operations, Geodetic Control, Photogrammetry, Right of Way Engineering, and Maps and Plans.
SURVEY OPERATIONS GROUP
The Survey Operations Group provides two primary divisions of support and services. The first division that this group is responsible for consists of establishing project-specific geodetic control, placement and survey of aerial photography ground control, and applications involving specialized field techniques and equipment. This includes use of GPS (Global Positioning System) receivers, high accuracy leveling equipment, and such items as reflectorless measurement systems. The second division that this group is responsible for consists of establishing policy and procedures for the agency and contracted survey work, establishing contract survey specifications, and providing technical support in the use of survey equipment and software necessary for the day to day duties of the region surveyors.
GEODETIC CONTROL GROUP
The Geodetic Control Group is responsible for maintaining and enhancing the statewide network of GPS Reference Stations in support of current and future transportation projects and to facilitate the advancement in positioning technologies. This includes maintaining an inventory on the location, condition, and data for benchmarks and other reference stations, facilitating establishment of permanent GPS correction broadcast sites, administering consultant contracts in conjunction with statewide geodetic control issues, and coordinating efforts of agency and consultant forces involved with any of the activities.
PHOTOGRAMMETRY GROUP
The Photogrammetry Group performs survey work to produce basemaps, mosaic images, and digital terrain models from aerial photography and related tools and techniques as well as plan photography missions, flight paths, and associated ground control plans. The group is also responsible for managing the agency aerial photo archives.
RIGHT OF WAY ENGINEERING GROUP
One of the main functions of the Right of Way Engineering Group is to provide unique expertise to the five Regions and consultants for the preparation of Right of Way Drawings and property descriptions. The group is responsible for maintaining and promoting the standards and practices of the Right of Way discipline and provides training to ODOT and consultants in Right of Way Engineering. Other responsibilities of the Right of Way Engineering Group includes: preparation of descriptions for the sale, leasing or renting of ODOT owned property for the Right of Way Section, preparation of exhibits for the jurisdictional transfer of obsolete segments of the state highway system to cities or counties, preparation of drawings and descriptions for Highway Corridor and Design Resolution for the realignment of state highways and prepares exhibit drawings for the Department of Justice for use in legal proceedings involving land acquisition for ODOT. They also serve as a resource to ODOT and other State agencies, local governments and the public on Right of Way drawings and descriptions and assist in determining existing right of way widths and alignments and the agency’s property rights.
MAPS AND PLAN CENTER
The Maps and Plans Center is responsible for maintaining records of various documents related to the agency survey, engineering, and construction activity. Among these documents are field survey notes, right-of-way maps, and as-constructed drawings.
