Alfred Hospital.

AIM: To describe the distribution of HIV plasma VL and CD4 cell count compared with clinical status of a cohort of HIV infected patients attending for outpatient treatment. To examine short-term outcome in relation to anti-retroviral exposure and VL. METHODS: VIDRL and MBC in collaboration with Fairfield Hospital began enrolling patients in an observational study in May 1995. In February 1996 a protocol for initial and 4 to 6 monthly follow-up VL assessments was introduced. RT-PCR was performed in 373 patients, 353 with CD4 and b-DNA in 34. Medical records were reviewed for clinical status and antiretroviral therapy. RT-PCR was performed using the Roche Amplicor method and b-DNA the Chiron methodology. RESULTS: VL and CD4 and proportion with ADI are tabulated for VL by RT-PCR and b-DNA groups [TABULAR DATA, SEE ABSTRACT VOLUME]. Type and duration of anti-retroviral therapy as well as 6 and 12 month ADI rate and mortality will be presented. CONCLUSION: In this group of patients with advanced HIV disease a single VL estimate correlates with CD4 cell and proportion with ADI. The relationship to short term survival will be determined.
