Enhanced Integrated Nutrient Management
headline bar
Untitled Document

Overview:
This project works to improve the capacity of policy makers, extension programmers, farmers and future land managers to make integrated nutrient management decisions that consider all components (feed, manure, cropping) of dairy operations. The project forges integrative approaches to nutrient management at several levels.
  • Regional whole farm analysis of dairy cow numbers, feed, manure and crop components and how decisions related to one component affects other systems components.

  • Addressing both nitrogen and phosphorus concerns simultaneously

  • Integrating interactions between human behavior and biophysical variability

  • Integrating research, outreach, and education into curriculum that helps farmers and future land managers develop nutrient management plans.

Research goals include:

Developing dairy diets that support high levels of milk production and produce manure that is less susceptible to environmental loss.
Investigate how herd management and manure handling and storage affect nutrient loss.
Evaluate the effectiveness of conventional and alternative cropping systems to provide feed and recycle manure nutrients

Research Highlights:

Updates on the final year of the four-year IFAFS grant
Presentations and comments from research team meeting, October 9, 2003

Examining the complete cycle: feed > manure > crops > education/outreach
Presentations from Winter 2001-2002 seminar

Presentations:

Includes linked Adobe Acrobat slide shows (.pdf). Acrobat Reader needed.
