Nineteen incoming college sophomores and juniors, representing 11 colleges, had a chance to learn about careers in dentistry at the 2008 Summer Dental School Experience. The five-day program to encourage students from diverse backgrounds to consider dental careers and the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry as their dental school of choice was held July 21-25, 2008.

School of Dentistry at the Minnesota State Fair
A record numbers of SOD volunteers were on-hand to meet and greet fairgoers at the AHC/School of Dentistry booth at the 2008 State Fair on August 25th. Although visitors to the booth numbered 350-500 in past years, more than 850 fairgoers stopped by this year and lined up, sometimes 8-deep, to learn about oral health, dental careers, and about the School of Dentistry. It was “Children’s and Seniors Day” at the fair and handout materials were appropriately targeted to the age groups: Children received a “Super Tooth” coloring/game book and sat at tables to draw while adults completed a nine-question quiz testing their knowledge about oral health for seniors & children and about the School of Dentistry. We talked with every visitor, walking them through the answers to the quiz , answering questions and playing with the children We also distributed brochures on topics of interest, including information about dental school clinics and careers in dentistry. And of course, every visitor, young and young-at-heart received a toothbrush imprinted with the name of the School of Dentistry.
School of Dentistry well-represented at IADR meeting
The University of Minnesota School of Dentistry was well represented at the International Association of Dental Research meeting held last week in Toronto. The 86th General Session of the International Association for Dental Research (IADR) featured more than 3,000 scientific abstracts, several cross-collaborative symposia, as well as two distinguished lecture speakers (Eric Meslin and Brett Finlay). University of Minnesota School of Dentistry representatives presented posters, gave oral talks, competed in the prestigious Unilever Hatton Competition, and represented the school in various other capacities.
