Florida's Imperiled Species

Freshwater turtles

Many species of freshwater turtles occur throughout Florida's inland waters.  Concern was raised this year about a perceived increase in harvest of Florida's freshwater turtles.  An FWC team is working on a long-term conservation strategy for Florida's amphibians and reptiles. To protect freshwater turtles while the FWC team works, a new rule was passed and is effective October 23, 2008 that will further limit freshwater turtle harvest.  See our FAQs for more information.
