Highways of the Future—A Strategic Plan for Highway Infrastructure Research and Development

The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) Office of Infrastructure Research and Development (R&D) developed this strategic plan and roadmap to guide all aspects of the office's research and technology initiatives for the next 10 to 15 years. 2008 Exploratory Advanced Research: Next Generation Transportation Solutions

After two years of scanning and convening activities to identify breakthroughs, FHWA research developed proposals to exploit potentially high-risk and high-payoff opportunities to investigate. Currently, 39 proposals are being externally peer reviewed and competed. Submitted proposals cover topics such as improvements to the communications bandwidth using nano- and semiconductor technologies; evolution of driving simulations; effects of public-private partnerships on asset management; new simulation technology for traffic safety analysis, and many others. 2007 Interactive Highway Safety Design Model (IHSDM) Public Release

The 2007 public release (Version 4.00) of IHSDM is available for free downloading. IHSDM is a suite of software analysis tools for evaluating safety and operational effects of geometric design decisions on two-lane rural highways. Long Term Pavement Performance Project Laboratory Materials Testing And Handling Guide

The Long Term Pavement Performance (LTPP) Laboratory Material Testing Guide was originally prepared for laboratory material handling and testing of material specimens and samples of asphalt materials, portland cement concrete, aggregates, and soils under the supervision of the Strategic Highway Research Program. This version of the Guide was updated to provides the basis for the quality control program used in performing the laboratory testing, the protocols used in testing the material samples, and the guidelines for handling these samples in the laboratory. Additionally, this document provides the guidelines used for identifying the pavement structure based on the material properties of the sampled layers. [More]
