PHAST Qualification

Qualified PHAST Specialists have successfully completed classroom and practical training, passed a rigorous exam, and demonstrated their ability to use the PHAST software tool.

Specialists apply this tool to help their plant or industrial customers identify ways to improve process heating system efficiency. The U.S. DOE recognizes these industry professionals as Qualified Specialists, but does not specifically endorse any individual or company.

PHAST Qualification

DOE recognizes PHAST Qualified Specialists for their ability to apply the PHAST tool with industrial users. Attendees who successfully complete a PHAST qualification workshop receive this designation. A Qualified Specialist can apply PHAST to help you identify opportunities for thermal efficiency of heating equipment.

Become a Qualified PHAST Specialist

PHAST helps you improve the thermal efficiency of your plant by providing methods and tools to survey process heating equipment that uses fuel, steam, or electricity, and identifying the most energy-intensive equipment. Industry professionals can earn recognition as a Qualified Specialist in the use of the PHAST software tool.

DOE and the Industrial Heating Equipment Association (IHEA) offer the Qualified Process Heating Specialist program; participants who successfully complete a qualification workshop and exam receive the designation. Qualified PHAST Specialists apply the PHAST tool to accurately gather pertinent system information and provide realistic "what if" scenarios for process heating system operation. These specialists have a thorough understanding of:

  • How to use PHAST software
  • How to accurately collect and input data for PHAST
  • What information sources, instruments and measurement devices to use for collection of necessary data required for use of PHAST
  • How to use PHAST to evaluate a process heating system and develop a measurement plan
