WASHINGTON, April 14, 2006 – Coalition forces in Iraq killed two suspected terrorists and captured several others, and found numerous weapons caches over the past two days, U.S. military officials said.
As coalition troops approached a Baghdad safe house yesterday, two suspects located in an adjacent courtyard opened fire. Coalition forces returned fire, killing one man and detaining another. Coalition forces then searched the house, detained two more men and found a pistol and a rifle, along with ammunition for both weapons.
The man who was killed was later identified as a retired officer who served in the Iraqi air force under the Saddam Hussein regime, U.S. military officials said.
U.S. soldiers discovered a large cache of weapons yesterday in Mosul after receiving a tip from a local citizen. The cache included bomb-making material, rocket-propelled grenade warheads, mortar shells, grenades, sniper rifles with scopes, small-arms ammunition, 10 pounds of plastic explosives and detonation cord. The confiscated items were transported to a secure location for disposal.
In addition, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division, soldiers captured two men near Bayji and safely destroyed a roadside bomb the men were setting up April 12.
Also on April 12, Bastogne soldiers of the 101st Airborne Division killed an insurgent and wounded another following an attack in Hawijah.
Soldiers of Company B, 1st Battalion, 327th Infantry Regiment, passed through a traffic control point during a combat patrol, when insurgents fired three rocket-propelled grenades at them. The soldiers returned fire and pursued the terrorist's truck.
They located the truck with the dead insurgent inside, but were unable to locate the other insurgent. Bastogne soldiers turned the body of the dead terrorist over to the Iraqi police and resumed their patrol.
In a separate April 12 incident, U.S. soldiers detained two men suspected of placing a roadside bomb along a road near Hawijah. Later that day, the soldiers detained two more individuals with bomb-making materials. All four suspects were detained for questioning.
In news from Afghanistan, Afghan National Army and coalition forces disrupted an insurgent cell during a combat mission in the Chora District of Uruzgan province last night.
Elements of the 3rd Kandak, 1st Brigade, of the Afghan Army's 205th Corps and coalition troops killed two insurgent fighters and detained two people suspected of recruiting suicide bombers to attack Afghan government officials and coalition forces, U.S. military officials said.
There were no civilian, Afghan or coalition troop injuries during the operation.
