WASHINGTON, April 11, 2006 – The Tennessee National Guard is finishing up relief efforts following deadly swarms of tornadoes that hit Tennessee twice last week.
A seven-member team of engineers from the 230th Engineer Battalion was deployed to Warren County to clear public roads, said Randy Harris, Tennessee National Guard public affairs officer. Also, 48 military policemen from the 168th Military Police Battalion deployed to Gallatin, Tenn., to do traffic control and enforce the town's dusk-to-dawn curfew, Harris said.
The engineer team has redeployed, and the military policemen are expected to be in place another day, Harris said.
On April 8 and 9, UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters from the 4th Squadron, 278th Armored Cavalry Regiment, flew reconnaissance missions to observe damage.
The relief efforts came after tornadoes raked northwestern Tennessee April 3, killing 24 people, and then returned April 8, killing 11 more. The weather system that created the Tennessee tornadoes also brought strong winds and hail to Indiana and Missouri, as well as reports of tornadoes in Alabama and Mississippi.
