Research Project: EXPEDITION IN SCOTLAND TO EXCHANGE TROPICAL AND SUBTROPICAL CONIFER GERMPLASM FOR CROP IMPROVEMENT

Objective:
To obtain germplasm of rare and interesting warm climate conifers from the Royal Botanic Garden in Edinburgh, Scotland for the U.S. National Plant Germplasm System and U.S. botanic gardens.

Approach:
Scientists will travel to the Royal Botanic Garden, Edinburgh, Scotland. They will select specimens from collections of the International Conifer Conservation Programme (ICCP). They will prepare germplasm of the specimens for transport and ship them to the U.S. The germplasm will be inspected by USDA/APHIS and sent to the Atlanta Botanical Garden. After establishment, samples will be sent to the Montgomery Botanic Garden and the National Plant Germplasm System for conservation and distribution to scientists worldwide. A detailed trip report, including information on all samples obtained, will be provided to ARS.
