Research Project:
BIOCONTROL OF DISEASES OF CACAO, A NARCOTIC CROP ALTERNATIVE
Location: Sustainable Perennial Crops
Project Number: 1275-21220-225-16
Project Type:
Specific C/A
Start Date: Feb 01, 2007
End Date: Feb 01, 2010
Objective:
The objectives of this research are to conduct laboratory and field studies of various biological agents for selective control of diseases of cacao, specifically, Moniliophthora roreri and Moniliophthora perniciosa. The identification of endophytes with disease biocontrol activities in the field are of special interest. The economic viability of biocontrol agents will be determined in order to develop a best practices manual for use by the farmer in cacao growing areas.
Approach:
Endophytes will be screened to demonstrate their ability to colonize cacao and for biocontrol of disease. It will be determined if cacao inoculated with endophytes have reduced disease pressure. Protocols will be developed for evaluation of biocontrol agents and fungicides in the field. In collaboration with cooperating institutions field trials of endophytes with biocontrol potential will be carried out. The economic impact of biocontrol of disease will be determined.
