John G. Hathaway
Director Civil-Military Policy Deputate
Mr. Hathaway is the Director of Civil-Military Policy in the Office of the Assistant
Secretary of Defense for Reserve Affairs. He is responsible for coordinating,
developing and overseeing National Guard and Reserve consequence management
policies and domestic preparedness programs involving military disaster assistance
to states, territories and local authorities. This includes integrating Reserve
components in support of Federal programs to mitigate the effects of terrorist
incidents involving weapons of mass destruction (WMD). He also works in partnership
with other DoD policy offices to shape a role for the Reserve components in
DoD's Homeland Security mission area.
Mr. Hathaway served more than thirty-six
years in the U.S. Army, retiring at the rank of Colonel. He entered the service
from Portland, Oregon.
Mr. Hathaway's military
career encompassed a variety of leadership positions to include: extensive command,
at platoon through brigade levels, in Airborne, Air Assault, Light Infantry
and Special Operations units; operations experience from battalion through Army
level, and three Joint Duty assignments. Of particular note, he developed, organized,
trained, and fielded the first DoD Response Task Force (RTF) and was its Deputy
Commander for the 1996 Olympic Games and the 1997 Presidential Inaugural. He
also has served as a Defense Coordinating Officer.
In addition to a Bachelor
of Science Degree from the U.S. Military Academy, Mr. Hathaway was awarded a
Master of Public Administration degree from Pennsylvania State University. His
military education includes graduation from the Army War College.
