OBJECTIVE: In order to obtain baseline data, HIV-seroprevalence was to be determined in a rural town in North Burkina Faso, where the ordinarily proposed sentinel group did not meet the required sample size. METHODS: A sample of 270 individuals, in the age group of 15 - 49 years, was randomly chosen on the basis of an especially established census list. The study was performed with local health staff and had only minimal external support. RESULTS: Literacy rate of the study population was low. A prevalence of 3.1%* (1.0%-5.2%) for HIV-1 infection and of 2.3% (0.5%-4.1%) for HIV-2 infection was found. Double infection was present in 1.9% (0.2%-3.6%) of the study population. One case (0.4%) of single HIV-2 infection* was found. Individuals who had attended school had a higher probability of being HIV-positive than illiterate individuals. CONCLUSION: The study showed a high prevalence of HIV-infection in a rural area of Burkina Faso for which no data had so far been available. The study showed furthermore that with minimal input a valid study on HIV-prevalence can be carried out in areas where the ordinary sentinel group cannot be used. * = confirmed by Western Blot.
