BACKGROUND: The AIDS Division of Thailand plans to develop the HIV/AIDS information database which is necessary to properly plan the prevention and control procedures. The aims are to create a network of database system and to develop systematic data collection, database and computer software related to HIV/AIDS at the provincial and regional levels. METHODS: 1) Studied and surveyed the existing database in the regional and provincial levels. 2) Analyzing the existing working systems for example information flowing, contents, and relationship between information and reports. 3) Setting up database framework and developed computer software for data collection and processing report. 4) Collected, analyzed data, processed the report and then linkage the database from each level to the AIDS Division by using the above software. 5) Evaluated the software and database network for expansion of the project. RESULTS: The information database related to HIV/AIDS was developed into five groups 1) Statistics related illness and death such as report of AIDS cases, HIV sentinel surveillance 2) Health and Social Service Systems 3) Administrative Information Systems including work plans and budget 4) General information such as number of population classified by sex and agegroup, number of special target groups, Local NGO's network 5) Research database for the locality (regional and provincial levels). Database system, network and computer software related to HIV/AIDS were developed. The software can work with Windows 95, Windows 98 and Windows NT. Moreover, it can work all together by using ready network or internet network system. CONCLUSIONS: The development of database network between the different levels (provincial, regional and central levels) provides timely, up-to-date, information for solution of problems occurred with the rapidly changing situations.
