WISE EARS!® Hits Washington Post Health Section
"Sound Offense, No Defense," the title of the December 19, 2000, cover story in the Health Section of the Washington Post, focused on the excessive noise exposure possible at a Washington Redskins football game and other sports events. NIDCD worked with the reporter, Keith Epstein, on this article, and our Institute was cited both as a resource and in the article. Thanks to several of our partners who helped out on this one!
WISE EARS!® Message Makes Modern Maturity
A special thanks to WISE EARS!® coalition partner Tricia Selby, of AARP, for her efforts to get the WISE EARS!® public service announcement in the January-February 2001 issue of Modern Maturity (the one with Shirley MacLaine on the cover). New Reporting Data
"Bang! Boom! Buzzzzz!", our rural health matte feature release, has generated 36 newspaper articles in 7 different states with a readership of 2,012,080. As of January 9, 2001, 16 placements were from the top 50 markets.
"Consejos de Salud," our WISE EARS!® tips piece, has taken off in Spanish. So far, the article has generated 12 newspaper articles with a readership of 797,344. Four placements were from the top 50 markets.

WISE EARS!® Materials Update
We have received a shipment of WISE EARS!® pens and bags for distribution at exhibits and meetings. We also have stickers in the following sizes for your use. Samples of these and other WISE EARS!® materials will be mailed to coalition members next month.

New Partners
WISE EARS!® Welcomes Two New Partners
The University of Kansas Intercampus Program in Communicative Disorders has joined the WISE EARS!® campaign. The program was established in 1955 and became the first program in the country to receive accreditation in Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA). The Intercampus Program combines the faculty, research, and clinical facilities of the Hearing and Speech Department at the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City and the Department of Speech-Language-Hearing in Lawrence. The WISE EARS!® contact is Susan Megerson.
EA, Acoustical Engineering Inc. and the Classroom Acoustics Special Interest Group, Inc. has joined WISE EARS!® Mike Nixon is the contact. According to Mike, classroom acoustics seems to be a worldwide topic of interest. He attended the 140th Acoustical Society and Noise Control meeting this December. He reported that 14 international acoustical societies joined the International Institute of Noise Control Engineering (I-INCE) initiatives relative to Noise and Reverberation Control for Schoolrooms. They include acoustical societies from Australia, Belgium, Czechoslovakia, France, Italy, Japan, New Zealand, Norway, Slovenia, Turkey, Great Britain, USA, Korea, and Hungary.

Danielle Steel is helping to raise money for H.E.A.R.--a nonprofit volunteer hearing health organization urging rock musicians to protect their hearing by wearing earplugs. She was invited to sing with her late son Nick Traina's band, Link 80, at a fund-raiser and replied, "If Stephen King can do it--why can't I?" H.E.A.R. is planning two CD Benefit Release parties in the Bay Area on February 2-3, 2001. The first is at Kicks in Oakland and the second at the Paradise Lounge in San Francisco. WISE EARS!® materials were disseminated at the Public Library and Consumer Health Conference January 10 in Washington, DC. In February, materials will be disseminated at the Indian Health Service Health Fair in Harlem, Montana, and the National Hearing Conservation Association meeting in Raleigh, North Carolina.
