ADA Transit Services in Maine

 

All transit providers in the State of Maine provide service in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). This service is provided in three different ways depending on the nature of the service:

  • demand response
  • route deviation
  • complementary paratransit

Each provider who offers ADA complementary paratransit services has a process for qualifying for those services under the regulations of the Americans with Disabilities Act.

The following transportation providers offer ADA complementary paratransit services:

Bangor Area

  • BAT Community Connector                                                                          The BAT Community Connector is a fixed route public transit system operated by the City of Bangor for the communities of the Greater Bangor Urbanized Area. These include Bangor, Brewer, Veazie, Orono, Old Town, and Hampden. The BAT also provides service to the University of Maine.
  • ACCESSIBILITY
    All BAT buses are wheelchair accessible. For information about additional ADA transit services or general information call the BAT at 207 992-4670 or e-mail at bat@bgrme.org.

Lewiston/Auburn Area

  • citylink                                                                                                         The citylink is a fixed route public transit system serving the cities of Lewiston and Auburn operated Western Maine Transportation Services (WMTS) for the Lewiston Auburn Transit Committee (LATC).   • ACCESSIBILITY:
    citylink has equipped its fleet with passenger lifts that can be used by persons with wheelchairs or walkers or less visible disabilities such as arthritis or heart or breathing impairments that make it difficult for them to use the bus steps. Most citylink buses provide space for two persons in wheelchairs. Downtown Shuttle buses have room for one wheelchair each.   • ADA PARATRANSIT
    Door-to-door paratransit service is available for individuals who cannot use regular route buses because of a disability. ADA certification and one-day advance reservations are required. For more information, call 207-777-4563.

Portland Area

  • METRO
    METRO is owned and operated by the Greater Portland Transit District, and provides public fixed route transportation in Portland, Westbrook, Falmouth Crossing and the Maine Mall area of South Portland. METRO operates seven days a week. For additional information call, (207) 774-0351. The Service Area: Portland,Westbrook, Falmouth Crossing and the Maine Mall area of South Portland and the Portland Jetport.

  • ACCESSIBILITY:
    All METRO buses are equipped with passenger lifts or ramps that can be used by persons with wheelchairs, walkers or persons with other disabilities that my require on-boarding assistance. Space is provided on each bus for two persons in wheelchairs.
  • ADA Accessible service for METRO is provided for all carriers by Regional Transportation through their ADAPT program. Link to Regional Transportation Program or call 207-774-2666

South Portland Area

  • South Portland Bus
    Owned and operated by the City of South Portland, provides public fixed-route transit service in South Portland, the Maine Mall area and downtown Portland. South Portland Bus Service operates Monday through Saturday.(207) 767-5556 Service Area: South Portland, Maine Mall Area and Downtown Portland.

All remaining transit providers in the State of Maine offer either demand response services or route deviation. Park and Ride Park & Ride. MDOT and the Maine Turnpike Authority maintain Park and Ride parking lots where travelers leave their vehicles, and where commuters can connect with car and vanpools.
