Space Environment Center
Changes Name to
Space Weather Prediction Center

SWPC Banner

On October 1, 2007 the NOAA Space Environment Center changed its name to the Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC).  The center is one of the nine National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) within NOAA's National Weather Service. The new name aligns the space weather center with the other NCEP centers and more clearly conveys its operational nature.

SWPC.noaa.gov is the new domain for web access (www.swpc.noaa.gov) and Anonymous FTP. The old domain, sec.noaa.gov, will continue to work for the foreseeable future. The simple web URL spaceweather.gov is also available.

The new name began appearing in web pages and product headers October 1. Web pages use NOAA web formatting standards and some have an updated look and feel, but the data displays and content did not change. Text and graphical products headers use Space Weather Prediction Center (or SWPC), but there were no changes to the file formats or content.

This new 3 ft by 7ft SWPC Banner hangs in our visitor area and travels to conferences and trade shows. SWPC Banner large (500kb high resolution) SWPC Banner small (100kb low resolution)

About Us

Mission Statement

Space Weather Prediction Center continually monitors and forecasts Earth's space environment; provides accurate, reliable, and useful solar-terrestrial information; conducts and leads research and development programs to understand the environment and to improve services; advises policy makers and planners; plays a leadership role in the space weather community; and fosters a space weather services industry. Space Weather Prediction Center is the Nation's official source of space weather alerts and warnings.

Who We Are

The Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) is one of the nine National Centers for Environmental Prediction and provides real-time monitoring and forecasting of solar and geophysical events, conducts research in solar-terrestrial physics, and develops techniques for forecasting solar and geophysical disturbances. The SWPC Forecast Center is jointly operated by NOAA and the U.S. Air Force and is the national and world warning center for disturbances that can affect people and equipment working in the space environment.

SWPC works with many national and international partners who contribute data and observations; we also share our data and products with them. We are pleased to support efforts worldwide to inform users of space weather.
