RRM Category: ANCILLARY SERVICES

RRM Module: Laboratory

Overview:
The RRM Laboratory staffing module estimates the requirements for medical technicians and technologists to provide anatomical and clinical pathology on body tissues and fluids and to perform autopsies, when appropriate. Laboratory results are reported to medical staff, federal, state and local authorities. The workload parameters that are the key variables in the staffing estimation are Average Daily Patient Load (ADPL) and Primary Care Provider Visits (PCPVs).

Services Description:
The Laboratory Department provides anatomical and clinical pathology in hospitals and health centers, including:

  • Collection, processing and analyzing of body tissues and fluids
  • Performance of autopsies where appropriate
  • Reporting of results to the medical staff, federal, state and local authorities

    Staffing Criteria:
    Inpatient:
    Fixed Medical Technologist staff of 1.0 FTE, plus 1.0 FTEs Medical Technologist for every 33 ADPL above 33 ADPL.

    Fixed Medical Technician staff of 0.25 FTE, plus 0.50 FTEs Medical Technician for every 33 ADPL above 33 ADPL.

    Medical Technician (CHA/P) - staff of 1 FTE for every 30,000 encounters at the location.

    Fixed Medical Technologist staff 1.0 FTE per facility with a level 2 Emergency Department.

    Fixed Medical Technologist staff 2.0 FTE per facility with a level 3 Emergency Department.

    Outpatient:
    Fixed Medical Technologist staff of 1.00 FTE for each facility, plus 0.50 FTEs Medical Technologist for every 7,874 PCPVs above 15,748 PCPVs.

    0.50 FTEs Medical Technician for every 7,874 PCPVs.

    Note: A clerical staff pool of 0.3 FTE/10,000PCPVs will be formed for Pharmacy, Laboratory and Imaging.
