EDITORS AND CORRESPONDENTS

The study is in the docket in the Federal Highway Administration's rulemaking, Hours of Service of Drivers. Along with the entire FHWA docket system, this proceeding has been transferred to the DOT docket system, with the new docket number being FHWA-97-002350. Copies of the study may be purchased at 10 cents per page.

Further information may be obtained from the DOT docket room at 800-647-5527. The room is open to the public from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays.

The study was a 7-year partnership among the U.S. DOT, Transport Canada and the Trucking Research Institute of the American Trucking Associations Foundation. Eighty drivers were observed during runs totaling 4,000 hours and covering nearly a quarter of a million miles. The study provides extensive information on the alertness, driving performance and physiological and subjective states of commercial drivers as they operated revenue-generating runs.

Sincerely yours,

George L. Reagle
Associate Administrator for Motor Carriers
