Project Implementation

The process of planning and implementing a distributed generation or combined heat and power project is different from that used for other energy efficiency projects. Therefore, FEMP has created a step-by-step approach to assist federal energy managers in carrying out DER and CHP projects at their facilities.

These are the eight general steps to follow if you're considering a DER or CHP project:

  1. Analyze your facilities' energy needs
  2. Select appropriate DER/CHP technologies
  3. Screen the technologies
  4. Acquire resources and assistance
  5. Develop a project plan
  6. Address potential barriers
  7. Install and operate your DER system
  8. Get your project recognized with a FEMP award

For the complete guide, visit Using Distributed Energy Resources: A How-To Guide for Federal Facility Managers (PDF 422 KB, 16 pp). Download Adobe Reader.

In addition to the How-To Guide noted above, FEMP has produced two other information resources to help federal agencies get their DER and CHP systems installed. FEMP's Interconnection and Permitting Guide is designed to further assist you in understanding the interconnection and permitting process for DER systems. And see FEMP's interactive Environmental Siting Guide for more information on environmental attributes and permitting requirements of DER systems. Additional information can be found on our Resources page. And, as always, FEMP can provide project assistance to agencies considering DER or CHP systems for their facilities.
