The Department of Labor's
Occupational Safety and Health Administration
(OSHA) funds
grants
to train workers and employers to recognize, avoid, and prevent safety and
health hazards in their workplaces. OSHA also provides training and reference
materials on such topics as
asbestos
and ergonomics.
OSHA's
Outreach
Training Program is the agency's primary way to train workers in the basics
of occupational safety and health. Through the program, individuals who
complete a one-week OSHA trainer course are authorized to teach 10-hour or
30-hour courses in construction or general industry safety and health
standards.
The Department's Mine Safety and
Health Administration provides education and training programs through its
Directorate of Educational
Policy and Development. The Directorate plans, monitors, and evaluates all
MSHA education and training programs addressing mine safety and health, and
provides training at the National Mine Health and Safety Academy in Beckley,
West Virginia. MSHA's Web site lists
