What is the Wirtz Labor Digital Library?
The Wirtz Labor Digital Library contains materials representative of the physical holdings at the Wirtz Labor Library, U.S. Department of Labor. The digital collection includes publications produced by the department throughout its history, as well as other publications on labor that are in the public domain (see copyright statement). While not as vast as our physical collection, the digital library is growing every day.
What is required to access the Wirtz Labor Digital Library?
The Digital Library is web-based and public-accessible so it can be viewed from any workstation with a web browser (Internet Explorer 5.5 and up, Netscape 7.1). Adobe Acrobat Reader is required to view and print the Wirtz Labor Digital Library PDF documents. In order to view the PDF of the documents you
must have a free PDF viewer (i.e., Acrobat Reader) available on your computer. For full functionality, Acrobat Reader 8 is recommended.
Can I print documents from Wirtz Labor Digital Library?
You can print selected pages of documents by clicking on the 'print' icon and then selecting the pages you want to print. (Note: the page number in print window should be the PDF page instead of the page number showing on document.)
The document is only displaying on half of the screen. How can I make it appear larger?
Once a document is selected, it is displayed on half a screen along with information about the document including title, author and date of publication. In the upper right hand corner of the screen there is an icon shaped like a sheet of paper. Clicking on this will display the document in its own window.
How do I save documents from from the Wirtz Labor Digital Library?
You may save a document by clicking on the 'saves a copy of the file' icon on the document display screen. This can be done when the document is first selected or after expanding it to its own window (see above).
How do I save a copy of the search results list from the Wirtz Labor Digital Library?
After running a search, you will see a 'save result' icon in the upper right-hand corner above the results list. Clicking on this icon will allow you to save the results list, but not the documents themselves.
How does the Digital Library relate to the Wirtz Labor Library online catalog?
Every item in the digital collection represents an item physically located in the library. The Wirtz Labor Library Online Catalog provides access to both the physical and electronic formats. When searching the catalog, you will see an "Electronic Resource PDF" link in the record if there is a digital file. If you are in the digital library, you may click on "View location in library" to see more detailed information about the item such as its physical description, holding information, and Library of Congress Subject Headings.
