Statement by U.S. Commerce Secretary Carlos Gutierrez on the Implementation of CAFTA in El Salvador
WASHINGTON—This is the first step in a process that has the potential to open new markets for American exporters, create jobs at home and improve the lives of millions of people in Central America and the Dominican Republic.
The implementation of CAFTA will lead to improved economic and national security for the Western Hemisphere and demonstrate once again that the best remedy for political instability and poverty lies in free trade.
I congratulate the people of El Salvador on this historic agreement and look forward to a long and prosperous relationship for American workers and the people of El Salvador.
