VA Establishes Energy Conservation Program
The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is developing an agency-wide program to improve energy efficiency and conservation in the department's facilities. Existing energy program initiatives will be brought under the umbrella of the Office of Management, which will establish and coordinate department-wide energy policies and programs.

Indian Health Service Receives Energy Award
Employees of the Indian Health Service (IHS), an agency in the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), have received HHS Energy and Water Management Awards. These employees have met or exceeded all the evaluation criteria in the individual, small group, and organization categories.
Each year HHS honors individuals and organizations that have made significant contributions to the efficient use of energy and water resources in the Federal Government. They have participated in areas of implementation, management, and maintenance.

Indian Health Service Hospital Earns ENERGY STAR Label
Blackfeet Hospital in Browning, Montana recently earned the ENERGY STAR label for superior energy performance. It is the first Indian Health Service hospital of the Department of Health and Human Services to receive the ENERGY STAR.
A Star is Born: Benchmarking Tool Helps Hospitals Achieve Energy Efficiency
The U.S. EPA's new national energy performance rating tool for Acute care and Children's Hospitals is highlighted. "By entering annual or monthly data into the ENERGY STAR online application (www.energystar.gov/benchmark), facilities directors receive immediate results that show exactly how they stack up against hospitals across the street and across the country. Hospitals that earn a score of 75 or higher (out of a possible 100) can apply for the [ENERGY STAR] label."

The U.S. EPA National Healthcare Manager for ENERGY STAR describes the new energy performance rating system available to hospitals. The rating system uses a 1-100 scale to give relative meaning to energy use. Hospital campuses or free-standing facilities can update their performance rating regularly to help set energy performance goals, verify upgrade savings, evaluate maintenance, and receive recognition for superior energy performance.

Whitman Honors First Hospitals to Earn ENERGY STAR Label
U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Christie Whitman officially launched the new national energy performance rating tool for hospitals at the American Hospital Association and American Society of Healthcare Engineering Headquarters in Chicago, IL and honored the first three ENERGY STAR hospitals in the nation.
