Jordan's leading industry and export commodities are phosphate and potash,
ranked in the top three in the world. These are used to make fertilizer.
The Jordan Phosphate Mines Company is the sole producer, having started
operations in 1935. In addition to mining activities, the company produces
phosphoric acid (for fertilizers, detergents, pharmaceuticals), diammonium
phosphate (for fertilizer), sulphuric acid (many uses), and aluminum
fluoride (a catalyst to make aluminum and magnesium).
The image covers an area of 27.5 x 49.4 km, was acquired on September 17,
2005, and is located near 30.8 degrees north latitude, 36.1 degrees east
longitude.
